Illegal or questionable uses of the PC’s are a nightmare from a management perspective. These issues can come in many forms. The following scenarios are forwarded to outline some issues:

Internet Pornography
In the internet porn business it is essential that the URL’s keep one step ahead of the Net Nanny Software systems. These URL’s can change their stripes faster than any URL blocker system can keep up. From the schools perspective, managing access to porn sites on school computers is an endless task. There are not enough staff resources to constantly monitor and update the Net Nanny software. The solution is to stop updating the URL blockers and live with the consequences or shut down the computer access to all.

Personal Freedom
The internet is a wonderful source of ideas and discussion forums and literally has a site for every religion, sect, cult, fad and movie. If two people think the same way about anything, there soon will be a site dedicated to that topic. Beyond the pornography realm, public schools are no in a position to judge what is or is not a personal freedom issue when it relates to the internet. Equal access to the internet means that they have to put up with kids who go to a site hosted by Billy Graham or a site hosted by Asama Ben Laden. Looking at a racist site is not a crime. Kids will push the limits. You either let it happen, control it through WebInspector or shut down computer access to all.
